Digital governance for a Human-Centred society
The world’s increasing interdependence and reliance on digital platforms, mobile applications, data, algorithms, and automated technologies poses various issues and challenges. Fake news and misinformation, personal data privacy risks, antitrust and platform monopolies present new challenges for emergent ‘platform societ(ies)’ (van Dijck et al., 2018). This special issue of Platform Journal focuses on “Digital Governance for a Human-Centred Society.” It highlights the pressing need to re-examine the roles of citizens, civil society, private sectors, governments, and NGOs in creating more fair, open, inclusive, and human-rights-centred governance of the digital sphere. The issue emphasises ‘human-centred’ societies where technologies are expected to improve individuals’ lives with consideration of inclusive growth, equal access, and social responsibility. In this case, digital governance is also deeply embedded within offline society, as power structures of inequality, violence, discrimination and marginality get replicated and become more complex through digital technologies. We invite research that explores the challenges, particularities, and commonalities of digital governance. Submissions highlighting experiences and insights from the Global South are especially welcome. This special issue aims to provide a platform for researchers and practitioners to present new research and developments in the digital governance area.
Areas of interest for this special journal issue include, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- Trust in the digital society between individuals, private and public sectors.
- Data concerns within a transnational context, such as issues of data colonialism.
- Global South digital transformations.
- Challenges and opportunities for inclusive governance.
- Privacy and ethics of new technologies.
- Surveillance society. Internet freedom and Human Rights.
- Governance of emerging technologies.
- Global, regional, and local approaches to digital governance.
- Emerging and future digital governance, citizenship(s), and policies.

Abstracts should not exceed 350 words. Abstracts are to be submitted no later than 1 October, 2024. Selected abstracts will be invited to submit a full paper, which will be due 3 February, 2025. Please be aware that acceptance of abstracts does not guarantee publication. All submissions should be from early career researchers (defined as being within five years of completing their PhD) or current graduate students undertaking their Masters, PhD, or international equivalent. Please send all further questions to platformjmc@gmail.com All eligible submissions will be sent for double-blind peer-review. Early submission is highly encouraged as the review process will commence on submission.
